LAND MANAGEMENT BY EVERY CONCEIVABLE POTENTIAL
After reading portions of several
environmental impact analysis documents, it is not hard to come to the
conclusion that the writers of such documents have no tolerance whatsoever
for the element of change in our natural surroundings. A professor
of Botany and Genetics at the University of Maryland, offered an interesting
observation. "Over ninety percent of all plant and animal species that
have ever lived on this planet are now extinct". "The truth of the
matter is," he said, "Extinction is also a natural process that we have
little, if any, ultimate control over." (Contnued: Land

The Search for Elizabeth Smart
Dozens of volunteers came out to Simpson
Springs on the 20th of July for a Search of the area requested by the SLPD
and the FBI. A worker in the area recalled seeing a vehicle in the
area that matched the description of a jeep owned by the prime potential
suspect. The area from the Delta north to Topaz Mountain was
searched by the Juab County Search and Rescue. The from Simpson Springs
south to Topaz was searched by ATV POSSE Alert Volunteers.
One group of searchers which included
Elizabeth's Grandfather, Dr. Charles Smart, actually located a site that
had every indication of being a Suspicious site. The ground had recently
been disturbed. There was visqueen sticking out of the ground and
partially exposed. Beer Cans were strewn everywhere and bullets were
found on the scene. The tracks on the ground suggested a vehicle the size
of the suspect vehicle. The BLM, FBI and SLPD were notified
of the find and came out to investigate the scene.
While the physical evidence
suggested a potential crime scene, the closer examination of the site concluded
that it had possibly been used as a poacher's blind.
The search will continue if
and when other material evidence suggests the possibility of a potential
location of Elizabeth. |
Accessorize!
Is there an avid follower of any sport who doesn't
want the latest and greatest tools for their sport? Well then, don't
count the ATVers out of the game. Many people spend more for
accessories than for the initial investment in their ATV.
Well, here are a few more things to put on your "Got
to have" accessory list:
-
HELMET COMM:
-
How does a parent keep track of their youngster while they
are on their ATV? How well does shouting commands work?
-
Oh look! There is a buck with velvet on it's horns, standing
there not twenty feet from you, how will you tell the members of your group
without spooking the buck?
-
Nature calls, but the members of your group are ahead.
If you stop now it may take an hour to catch up if you can find them.
If you could only get them to stop for a few minutes.
The solution to these and many
other issues is the Helmet Comm. The Helmet Comm is a radio headset
and microphone that clips to the side of any helmet and attaches to your
UHF/VHF, GMRS, HAM, or FRS radio.
Seriously, this will change
the way you ride and the safety you ride with. For more information
Please check out the new page in the ATV university on the Helmet Comm.

Share the Site
Judging from the favorable comments
from our readers,(see "Kind Words from our Readers" on the Bulletin Board)
the Utah ATV Trails web site is the greatest thing to happen to the sport
of ATV since the introduction of the fourth wheel.
Please join us in our ever ongoing
effort to educate the public about the safety and trail information found
on the Utah ATV Trails web site. To make this easy we've created
a page that permits
you to print off cards you can cut up and share with your friends and neighbors
and people you meet on the trail.
If you have a web site we also
invite you to share your traffic with us by posting a link to our web site.
In most cases, we are happy to reciprocate. No one has a more extensive
link page than we do. |
Spoilers at Skyline Drive in Bountiful
Is it not always true that the
greatest danger to any community comes from within the community itself?
Well folks, it is true of our ATV/OHVcommunity. There is an element
of our society that pays no heed to any rules, laws or even simple suggestions
when it comes to the use of our public and private lands. "No rule
has ever been made that can not be broken," is their unspoken creed.
They may be obedient as far as those in authority can see them, but when
out of view, they are completely unrestrained by convention and common
sense. (Continued

STILL HIGH FIRE DANGER!!!
The BLM and USFS have both requested that
we inform our readers of the extreme dangers with the
potential for fire in the back country. Off road/trail
travel should be avoided. Just the additional heat from a
muffler could reach the cumbustion point on the bone
try grasses and shrubry in the back country.
-
There are no camp fires permitted or fires of any kind
including charcoal briquettes even in existing campgrounds. (propane and
gas stoves are still okay.)
-
Motorcycles and ATVs are to have USDA approved spark/noise
arrestors and mufflers. If your machine has a modified muffler
you are not permitted the use of State or Federal administered property.
-
Smoking on BLM and Forest Service land is permitted within
enclosed vehicles only.

ATV Posse Alert List - WE NEED YOU
Last
month's annoucement of the ATV Posse Alert List started off with a tremendous
response from our readers. However, there is always room for more
volunteers in this effort. There were nine brave souls who
signed up for the list. Many many more are needed.
We had our first alert from
the list and we were very pleased with those who dropped everything and
came a running.

Marching On...
From 12,505 to 14,749 counter clicks this month.

Utah ATV trails has recorded 813,398 overall hits. If you found
us through a Google search engin, you are in good company. About

ACTION UPDATE
Shoshone Trail - Stalled in the Senate - waiting
for a vote. Notwithstanding the Official designation of a national
recreational trail system, the State of Utah and the Wasatch Cache National
Forest are moving ahead with plans to GPS and start signing the trails.
Keep in mind that this system consists of trails that are presently open
and available for OHV use.
San Rafael National Monument - It seems that there
is now a dispute about the land to be traded to the State of Utah for the
land in the new National Monument. Everyone wants a better
deal. Will the people ultimately end up the winner or the looser,
that is the real question. |
Suzuki's New Splash
Suzuki has just announced a new line of ATV's they call
the "Vinson 4x4". This handsome new product line joins the Eiger
line in the Utility market, but with a sporty twist. According to
Suzuki, this new line is the "Sport Utility" solution that people have
been looking for.
The design is interesting. The lines of the gas tank
and seat are suggestive of Honda styling, while the front fenders and deck
would suggest a Yamaha influence. I've ridden one of the 250's in
this line and must say that I was well impressed with its power and responsiveness.
See the Vinson soon at your local
Suzuki dealer. |
