Chris' Summer '03  Adventures
written by Chris Brimhall - South Jordan

Starting May of 03 started my riding season. I would like to share my rides with the rest of you.  So here goes. There are always rides to Five mile pass being only a short trip from my home. There is every level of skill in the trails found in the area. To my way of thinking.

Then for some place else to go in the area I went up Black Rock Canyon. Black Rock is aprox 17 miles due south of 5 Mile Pass. For my first tour I went from the parking lot at Five Mile Pass down the west side of the Ssouthern mountains (Thorpe Hills) and quite by accident I found a BLM sign for Black Rock Canyon. At the base many seem to like to camp in the tall cedars. Black Rock Canyon takes you to the east from this piont over the Tinic mountains and ends up By Allens Ranch. In Fairfeild you will see a sign 14 miles to Allens Ranch.
I went exploring more than once out there. One trip myself and ridin' partner DR stopped high a top the mountains and cooked steak's along with cold veggies pudding for desert. What a great ride.
I found Black Rock Canyon area a nice place for a day.
In this area. I hope every one has ridden American Fork Canyon up Tibble Fork. There are may day rides. I have made many trips this summer. It has it's challenages. Best is just some pictures

Tyng's grave a brave soul died 1/19/06 in an avalance. The question that always comes to my mind is what was George doing in the mountain above 10000ft in 1906. I find his resting place peacful and beatiful.

AF 102 is a picture from the top of Mary Ellen Canyon. You almost make the summit but not quie the view is worth the ride.
Sorry to say I have no pictures of my day in Erureka Utah. There are many old mine roads and trails in the area. Most is private land but the locals say if you mind your business and stay to the roads no one cares if you ride in the area. If you like the lure of old mines. It is quite a site. Over the mountain to the south and by the highway going to the sand dunes if you look you can find a grave yard from the late 1800's. It was  great place to spend the day. Early in the spring is best to avoid the Crickets. This area was just black with crickets this year and last.
My next adventure was with a good friend from Toronto Canda.  Harold  flew into town we left directly from the airport to Marysvale Utah. Although the Piaute trail is wonderful, a must ride is Minners Canyon. From the gas station go west and you will reach heaven. It is not part of the piaute trail but worth ever minute. When you reach the bottom of the canyon you will find the Miner Musem. It was created by the forest service and it is great.
( insert Pute 101) Talking the Cottonwood Road trail will take you almost to the top of the west side of the tusher mountains. We went the weekend of June 5 and was still snow out of the high country. but the ride for the view was worth it.

After coming out of Minners Canyon and stopping for lunch and gas, Heres our first day trail 2 from Marysvale to trail 1 to trail 13 to I 70 crossing to trail 1 again. To trail 76 where we were lost for a hour or so. (Love folks that take down the signs) to State route 89 up the rail bed to the Big Rock Candy Mountain, dinner and back to our wonderful cabin. 125 miles in all but what a day. (We call Chris "boiler plate butt")
Day 2 Ride back to the Big Rock Cnady Mountain. Breakfast down the rail bed through the tunnel

 Back up 76 to 1 ( junction with 13) down 1 to 74

At the bottom you cross hwy 89 Your at a cafe called Hovvers the food is great. Across to the east side of Hwy 89 plenty of roads just to ride and look around.
Day 3 We took trail 2 across the deasert to the east of Marysville and went to a little town Named Koosherm. On trail really come to mind on our way there. Trail 33 in places is not for the faint of heart. It is steep, rocky, hair pin switch backs. About half way across we came across some folks going the other direction. Their first question was how far till we get off this! There are many places across thi trail if you meet on coming traffic well all of ya are in a very bad possition nowhere to pass to steep to back down and to steep to back up! A great ride.

In all the 3 days netted 370 mile of some exciting riding. The whole story of our 3 day adventure would take 8 hours to write
Two weeks latter , Myself and DR started in Fillmore and rode Trail 1 to Marysvale and back what a day 170 miles. Not a lot of time to look around but a great trip. We stopped at Hovvers for lunch what a great place to eat. The ride was worth the lunch. Not many trails to follow. 1 from Fillmore to 74 to Hovvers cross the river behind the cafe around the back side to Marrysvale stopped for fuel 2 to 13 13 to 1, 1 back to Fillmore. We both had tired backsides by the end of the day but wish we could find the time to do it again brfore snow closes the mountains.

(Insert str106)
Down water Canyon up Timber Canyon to the main road to the top of Stawberry peak across and passing The junction of the Left Fork of the White river to Sheeps Creek up Indian Canyon across and to the Marina a Strawberry Bay. Back to the Left Fork of the white river and back to our ride home. It doesn"t get better the this.
